  • Village at Leesburg will hold its annual Pet Festival on May 3 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Village at Leesburg Plaza in front of 1602 Village Market Blvd SE—attendees will enjoy pet exhibitors, adoption groups, a lure coursing course and a pet talent contest while the first 300 guests receive a free branded pet item.  Blue Ridge Leader

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Qdoba Mexican Eats opened its doors in Loudoun County on Monday, March 24 at Ashbrook Commons in Ashburn—after a weekend of preview hours with free food. It replaced a Sweet Frog froyo shop and a new Rush Bowls restaurant will open nearby in April.  The Burn

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bach to Rock musical school in southern Loudoun County will move from its 4,000 s.f space at South Riding Market Square to a 2,600 s.f former bank building at South Riding Town Center roughly a mile away—landlords said. The school has not confirmed a timeline for the move.  The Burn
  • On March 21, Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed 185 bills including HB 1910 and SB 1289 which ban public elementary and secondary schools from serving foods with certain artificial color additives in school meals or competitive food. The law is expected to provide healthier meal options for students as it takes effect.  Blue Ridge Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Leesburg supervisors urged Dominion Energy to follow a 2005 memorandum with the Northern Virginia Regional Parks Authority that limits clear-cutting trees near power lines along the W&OD trail, and they expect the company to protect the trail from added risks.  Loudoun Times-Mirror

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leesburg Town Council held its final budget mark-up session Monday night to find $647,000 in spending cuts or revenue increases needed after eliminating the $25 vehicle license fee—Town Manager Kaj Dentler proposed several saving measures including reducing the cost-of-living adjustment for employees and canceling a police lieutenant hire while staff worked to meet new state deadlines.  Loudoun Now
  • The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors revised its meeting rules on March 18 to eliminate the 5 p.m. public comment session, reduce board member comments from five to three minutes, and set the remote participation request deadline to noon on the day of the meeting—these changes will take effect at the next meeting on Tuesday, April 1.  Loudoun County
  • The Leesburg Planning Commission recommended approval of the amended Greenway Manor rezoning to allow 141,125 square feet of development on the South King Street campus—plans include reusing historic buildings and adding an indoor theater, offices, a school, a place of worship, restaurants and shops. The applicant, Stanfield LLC, must address 14 issues on parking, noise and environmental impacts before the Town Council holds a public hearing and makes final decisions.  Loudoun Now
  • Gov. Youngkin signed eight bills on Monday before a midnight deadline that were introduced by Loudoun representatives — three by Sen. Kannan Srinivasan set up hospital fee rules, add a member to the early childhood commission and expand tax credit eligibility for gun safes. Other bills let officials share health records to help people reenter the community, change clean energy finance rules and improve legal protections for minor witnesses, and 38 additional bills remain pending action.  Loudoun Now
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin announced Monday morning that he included funding in a budget amendment to help turn Oak Hill, the historic home of President James Monroe, into a state park; the General Assembly will consider the amendment on April 2. Conservation partners have secured more than $46 million for the nearly $52 million project —additional funding will be sought— as local leaders work to fill the remaining gap.  Loudoun Now
