COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents can join multiple spring events from Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy with a 'Writing in Nature' workshop today (April 2) at Rust Sanctuary, bird walks, guided wildflower tours, a Native Plant Sale on April 11, and a 'Run the Greenway' race on May 3.   • On March 10, the Loudoun County Finance and Economic Development Committee advanced the design for the Western Loudoun Recreation Complex on a 142-acre site west of Purcellville, with construction set to begin in early 2027 pending final approvals and funding.  Blue Ridge Leader
  • A preconstruction community meeting for the upcoming Pickleball Courts project is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Ida Lee Park Recreation Center near Freedom Park, with a groundbreaking ceremony planned for Wednesday, April 8 at 10 a.m.  Blue Ridge Leader
  • Ketoctin DAR will plant four native saplings with lineage from historic presidential gardens to dedicate President’s Hill as part of America250 celebrations. The event begins at 11 a.m. on Friday, Apr. 24, at *Oatlands Plantation* and will welcome 60–75 community attendees.  Blue Ridge Leader

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montana Cochran was crowned the first Miss Lincoln Strawberry Festival during a March evening at Endhardt Winery, where she expressed her excitement to serve the community. The festival returns May 15-17 with strawberry contests, live music, family activities and a scholarship program for young women.  Blue Ridge Leader
  • Loudoun County Public Library is holding its 13th annual poetry contest that offers cash prizes for local and regional poets; submissions are due online by Sunday, May 17, and winners will be announced on June 23 at Sterling Library.  Loudoun Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Board members from Friends of the Blue Ridge Mountains served as judges at the LCPS Regional Science & Engineering Fair, where high school students showcased interdisciplinary projects that addressed challenges such as climate change and energy demands (including computer vision and physics).  Blue Ridge Leader
  • Thomas Balch Library will host historian Sherryl Belinsky on Saturday to present methods for documenting female patriots from the Revolutionary War. The event, featuring live demonstrations of online resources, will take place in the library’s lower-level meeting room and online (pre-registration required).  Loudoun Now
  • Officials with Loudoun County Public Schools said records for detailed discipline statistics could not be found when asked through a FOIA request, despite discussions at a board meeting. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Loudoun County Preservation and Conservation Coalition will host three public meetings on the groundwater supply.   • The demolition of Philomont’s historic Horse Show Grounds ended over 60 years as a community gathering spot — only the cook shack remains today as plans for nearly $30 million and seven acres on Snickersville Turnpike spark local concern.  Blue Ridge Leader
  • The Army has offered to buy the historic Middleburg Training Center, a key horse-training facility, and local leaders, trainers and businesses worry it could hurt the equine economy.   • Dr. Mike, a local psychologist, explains that parenting teens can be challenging as their developing brains alter communication, urging Leesburg families to spend quiet moments together—whether during a car ride or a coffee run—to better connect with their children.  Blue Ridge Leader
