  • Volunteers gathered at Raflo Park on Saturday morning to kick off the month-long Keep Leesburg Beautiful campaign by cleaning key areas shown on a town GIS map—Mayor Kelly Burk said volunteers aim to pick up 1,000 pounds of litter.  Loudoun Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Ketoctin DAR chapter celebrated 75 years by dedicating a plaque at the manor house now serving as an events center at Raspberry Plain—local leaders including Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk, Del. Geary Higgins and Clerk Gary Clemens attended to honor Thomson Mason’s patriotic legacy. The ceremony marked decades of preserving local history and promoted the chapter’s mission of historical education.  Loudoun Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After renaming committees recommended new names for Mercer Middle School and Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School, chairs will present the options—Gum Spring Middle for Mercer and Loving Elementary for Frances Hazel Reid—to the School Board tonight. The Board will vote on the proposals at a public hearing scheduled for today at 6:30 p.m.  Loudoun Now
  • On April 30, the Loudoun Chamber will hold its first National Civics Bee live competition at Morven Park where 21 middle school students, selected from 36 essay submissions, will test their civics knowledge in a two-round live quiz. The top five finalists will discuss their essays and answer questions to advance to state finals on June 7 in Williamsburg — the Loudoun winner will earn a $500 prize and a chance to compete for prizes worth at least $50,000.  Loudoun Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leesburg gave $100K in funding to the George C. Marshall International Center — which announced plans to build a new museum and visitor center.  Loudoun Times-Mirror
  • Residents filled the Leesburg Council chamber and spilled into the Town Hall’s second-floor stairwell on Tuesday night to share concerns over proposed noise ordinance changes that would allow amplified outdoor music and impose fines escalating to permit revocation and misdemeanor charges—town attorney Chris Spera said the decision will be delayed until a sound expert is hired. The proposals aim to update a program discontinued in 2023 while balancing Leesburg’s growing music scene with residential quiet.  Loudoun Now
  • On Tuesday night, Purcellville Town Council voted to eliminate the police department from its budget and to shift meals tax revenue to pay for utilities while making interim Town Manager Kwasi Fraser permanent without interviewing 80 candidates. Residents protested the move as officials said it would save over $3.2 million a year and that the Loudoun County Sheriff would provide police services—ending double taxation for the town.  Loudoun Now
