COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leesburg’s Spanky’s Pizza and Subs held a ribbon cutting yesterday with free pizza, raffle tickets and live music. Second-generation restaurateur Azmi Zarou opened the renovated location —at 62 Plaza St. NE— and Mayor Kelly Burk spoke during the event —which followed a soft rollout over Thanksgiving—.  Loudoun Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • One Loudoun in Ashburn is adding full-length stores from Williams-Sonoma—a 5,800 s.f. space—and Pottery Barn—a 13,260 s.f. free-standing building—in a new section under construction. The project will also include additional retailers and eateries along Exchange Street as well as a winter ice skating rink and a 7-story residential building.  The Burn

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly two dozen speakers shared their views at a school board hearing on April 9 about renaming Mercer Middle School and Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School. The board will vote on the new names on April 22, and the committees have chosen Gum Spring for Mercer and Loving Elementary for Reid—efforts aimed at addressing ties to racism.  Loudoun Now
  • At a hearing on April 9, the school board heard from speakers both for and against renaming two Loudoun County schools due to Confederate ties—additional meetings will address the issue before a final decision is made.  Loudoun Times-Mirror

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Leesburg Town Council and Environmental Advisory Commission Chair Paul Sheaffer presented the 2024 Tolbert Award for environmental stewardship to the Earth Care Team of Leesburg Presbyterian Church on Tuesday. The team—led by Laura Renauld and Kathy Brown—has reduced waste, improved energy use, and will plant a backyard habitat on Market Street this spring to boost local sustainability.  Loudoun Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Administrator Tim Hemstreet announced Monday that Assistant Chief of Operations James Williams was chosen to be the new fire chief after Keith Johnson retired after a 40-year career — Williams began as a volunteer firefighter and worked his way up to improve first responder safety — and his strong training and education will support his new role.  Loudoun Now
  • Chief Keith Johnson retired after 40 years of service with the Loudoun County fire system where he led responses such as 9/11 and the COVID crisis—he will now spend more time with his family while finishing his term on local boards.  Loudoun Now
  • Last week, the Leesburg Police Department did well at the Iron Dog Competition held at Kettle Run Highschool in Nokesville where four K9 teams finished a course that is 1.5 miles long with challenges such as suspect searches, odor detection, agility and apprehension exercises—Senior Police Officer L. Brickley and his partner Elmore took top placements in narcotics search and vehicle sniff while other teams also placed.  Loudoun Now
  • Purcellville Mayor Chris Bertaut received an email on April 10 at 11:23 suspending his COLT membership over allegations of FOIA violations, lack of transparency, and conflicts of interest. Bertaut responded that he welcomes credible proof and stands by his council’s plan to stabilize town finances—urging a review of the facts before further judgment is made.  Blue Ridge Leader
