Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of April.
Good morning, Leesburg.
Construction is underway on Loudoun’s second Yummy Shawarma restaurant at 42882 Truro Parish Drive in Ashburn— it will open in May or June in a retail center that also houses Broadlands Brickoven Pizza and Cafe Opera.
Loudoun County Public Schools created a new Career, Technical and Adult Education department led by Michael Grubbs and will unveil a five-year plan to expand career education to all 17 career clusters across the county.
Programs like Job for a Day and the Health and Medical Sciences Academy showed strong participation, and new efforts — including ACCESS and a summer work program — will start next school year to boost work-based learning.
A public hearing will be held at the division—administration building from April 28 to May 1 after parents Caroline and Vincent Prisciandaro filed a complaint alleging that Loudoun County Public Schools did not follow special education rules, leaving their high school son reading at a third-grade level. The complaint—claiming educational negligence and seeking compensation for over $250,000 spent on tutoring—points to ongoing issues with IEP compliance.
Loudoun homeowners can join Solarize Virginia to learn about solar options and receive free satellite solar assessments—participants also get streamlined installations, discounted systems, and access to a 30% federal solar tax credit along with local incentives.
Those interested may attend a virtual session on April 23 at 12:00 p.m., May 20, or June 2, or see a presentation at the Loudoun County Energy and Environment Forum on May 22 as the program runs through July 15.
The county’s Planning Commission recommended approval of the Greenfield Farm plan to build 518 housing units and commercial space along Evergreen Mills Road near the Executive Airport.
The plan includes a three-phase road improvement project and changes to protect a bald eagle nest and a historic manor—officials note concerns about traffic and airport impact, with further action expected in May.
Middleburg officials are reviewing proposals to update water restrictions and study a tiered rate plan to cope with severe drought, and water customers may face limits of 150 gallons a day or a 10% use reduction for businesses—noncompliance could lead to doubled bills or service shutoff. The council increased water and sewer rates by 3% and is seeking public feedback to have an updated plan ready before summer.
County supervisors approved a $5.8M construction support services contract yesterday for the Western Loudoun Recreation Complex near Purcellville, awarding it to Hill International after four companies submitted proposals.
Final designs are in progress (community meetings have shaped the plan) and construction will begin in summer 2026 with a fall completion after a special exception review.
