- ➤ Lovettsville Pastor Andreas Armstrong started the Steeple to the People initiative after COVID-19 caused church attendance to drop and now brings worship to homes, garages and porches in the area. He and a small group meet three Sundays a month at 11:30 a.m.—offering hymn singing, Bible readings and prayers without expecting donations. Loudoun Now
- ➤ The extended sidewalk dining program will return to downtown Leesburg on Friday, May 2 according to a news release and will allow local establishments to serve meals outside. Loudoun Times-Mirror
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Texas federal jury last week returned one not guilty verdict and deadlocked on other charges for Loudoun business owners Edward Walsh Vaughan of Droumavalla Farm and Hadi Akkad of Flying Ace Farm Distillery and Brewery—after the judge denied a motion for acquittal—so a retrial is scheduled for next month. - ➤ A 16-year-old girl is suspected of fatally overdosing at a home in Ashburn from April 18th to April 20th, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. Loudoun Times-Mirror
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday night, the Leesburg School Board approved renaming Mercer Middle School to Gum Spring Middle School and Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School to Mildred and Richard Loving Elementary School, with both changes set to take effect July 1—part of a five-year effort to remove ties to slavery and racism. The renaming votes passed 6—3 after committees of teachers, parents, and community members reviewed name options. Loudoun Now

- ➤ Leesburg Town Council was briefed on a billing transition that will lower water and sewer rates for 3,300 out-of-town customers starting July 1 because of the Compass Creek annexation agreement with the county—this agreement includes an annual $2 million payment that stops a 50% surcharge on these accounts. Leesburg will send letters and post a webpage with answers to frequently asked questions later this month. Loudoun Now
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A 2024 survey by the Loudoun County Advisory Commission on Youth—gathering responses from over 300 local students—found that youth overdoses decreased from 22 in 2023 to 6 in 2024 while 38% reported alcohol is easy to obtain. The report also noted a shortage of late-hour spaces for teens and recommended extending hours at local libraries and community centers. Loudoun Now
