EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ In Loudoun County, the school board voted Tuesday to rename Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School to Mildred and Richard Loving Elementary School—Mercer Middle School will soon be renamed Gum Spring Middle School after a review found both names had ties to racism. WTOP
- ➤ The Loudoun County School Board voted unanimously last night to reject changes to retiree healthcare and appointed a select committee to develop a new plan. Retirees, current employees and the Loudoun Education Alliance had pushed back on the plan that would cut benefits for spouses and dependents when retirees become Medicare eligible — prompting concerns over transparency. - ➤ Kimberly Poole of J. Lupton Simpson Middle School and Jeff Joseph, principal at Dominion Trail Elementary School, were named the region’s top educational leaders with Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year awards sponsored by The Washington Post. They each received a $7,500 prize, a trophy, and a profile in the paper when LCPS Supervisor Carrie Simms presented the awards during a Tuesday School Board meeting — an honor that highlights their dedication to student success. - ➤ On Tuesday, Purcellville Town Council voted to fully fund its police department for Fiscal Year 2026 after residents and two board members raised concerns that defunding could slow response times—officials added that a full budget review will address the department's future. The decision reverses earlier plans to cut costs by transferring law enforcement to the county sheriff’s office. WTOP
- ➤ On Tuesday the Leesburg Town Council voted to rezone the Greenway Manor campus to expand Destiny School of Arts, allow construction of a commercial inn and turn the historic barn into a performing arts center—residents voiced concerns about noise and parking that led to stricter event limits. The rezoning passed with six votes in favor and one councilmember abstaining due to a conflict of interest. Loudoun Now

- ➤ Loudoun County’s Department of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Services will offer free Rapid REVIVE! opioid overdose training on April 29 at the Shenandoah Building in Leesburg from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Residents can drop in to view a short training video, receive naloxone kits + get information on opioids and fentanyl without needing to register.
