BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local vineyards were hit by a hard freeze Monday night when temperatures fell into the mid-20s, damaging buds at many wineries while some higher elevations were spared. Growers now assess losses + prepare for a challenging season ahead.  Loudoun Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Loudoun County will host a free festival celebrating local Latino culture on Saturday, May 2 at the Douglass Community Center in Leesburg.  Loudoun Times-Mirror
  • Residents around Loudoun County are reconnecting with traditional crafting (often called grannie crafts) as they rediscover old skills and techniques. Local workshops and classes are supporting a renewed interest in these time-honored hobbies.  Loudoun Times-Mirror

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Loudoun Student Environmental Action Showcase is set for April 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Academies of Loudoun, where 90 student teams will present projects on water, energy and habitat conservation to compete for $4,000 in prizes—including a Virginia Diploma Seal for Excellence.  Loudoun Now
  • Three Loudoun County Public Schools principals have been named Principals of Distinction (an honor granted by the Virginia Department of Education) for their proven leadership.  Loudoun Times-Mirror

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the U.S. Drought Monitor declared severe drought in most of Loudoun County after a month of below-average rainfall and high temperatures; this is the county’s first severe classification since February. Nearly all of Virginia now faces severe drought.  Loudoun Now
  • Loudoun County’s Earth Day festival will take place at Franklin Park in Purcellville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 25.  Loudoun Times-Mirror

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Loudoun County supervisors approved plans Wednesday to transform the former Westpark Golf Course into a park with trails, pavilions, and an 18-hole disc golf course near homes despite neighbor noise concerns; changes include repositioning baskets and adding plant buffers to reduce sound.  WTOP
