CRIME NEWS

  • Melvin Wasike, charged in the 2021 Leesburg murder and found not guilty by reason of insanity, will receive a second mental health review after his attorney requested an independent evaluation while he continues in-patient treatment at Central State Hospital—Judge Fisher stated that release is not an option.  Loudoun Now

  • Leesburg’s Preservation Team will host its first Preservation Day on May 8 at Thomas Balch Library — the event will mark a new effort to celebrate and protect the town’s history.  Loudoun Times-Mirror

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Loudoun County School Board approved renaming Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School to Mildred & Richard Loving Elementary School and will soon rename Mercer Middle School to Gum Spring Middle School due to links to a slaveholder and a racist past. The changes passed by a 6 to 3 vote after History Matters reviewed the names and community feedback was heard.  Inside Nova

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leesburg Town Council approved the conceptual design for the Lassiter Way Beautification project on April 22 — a plan that adds road murals at the Loudoun and Market Street entrances, hanging lights, and landscaping enhancements. The murals will be referred to the Commission for Public Art while staff prepares a capital improvement project for the remaining work in the fiscal year 2027 budget.  Loudoun Now
  • Loudoun County Public Schools Superintendent Aaron Spence announced today that LCPS will not file the federal certification for DEI practices because the language is vague and does not add to existing civil rights laws. He said the decision comes despite the risk of losing federal funding for programs, as the district already meets state and federal requirements.  Loudoun Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Inova Health System’s Blood Donation Center in Sterling celebrated 20 years Wednesday morning as hospital and county leaders honored longtime staff and regular donors. The 23,000-square-foot center processes about 11,000 donations a year and supports programs like the fire and rescue FACT program—started after a 2017 crash—ensuring blood products are safely tested and shipped.  Loudoun Now
