COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 2,200 runners participated in the annual Run the Greenway races on the day the Dulles Greenway was closed to traffic+ raising funds for local nonprofits.  Loudoun Now
  • County officials plan a new 34-acre park near Light Ridge High School (athletic fields, a playground and a natural trail) pending permits from the supervisors and planning commission with $28 million in funding. Residents have raised concerns about lighting and traffic, and further review is scheduled.  Loudoun Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Shake Shack is under construction at Cascades Marketplace where an old McDonald's was torn down for the new restaurant. New signage went up this week and a June 10 opening is possible but not yet confirmed.  The Burn

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 27, Loudoun County Public Schools recognized 362 teacher cadets at Briar Woods High School with a ceremony organized by the Division of Career, Technical, and Adult Education, the Department of Human Resources and Talent Development, and Shenandoah University — highlighting the Grow Our Own program for future educators.  Blue Ridge Leader
  • LCPS bus driver Larry Foster took first place at the Region 4 School Bus Road-e-o at Potomac Center on April 18 and will represent the district at the national level. The competition brought together skilled drivers from four school districts.  Blue Ridge Leader
  • The Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy will host the Peterson Young Naturalist Program Awards Celebration on Sunday, May 31, from 2-4 p.m. at Cardinal Ridge Elementary School in Centreville (featuring interactive demonstrations, student journal displays, and a keynote presentation) to recognize outstanding work by students and teachers.  Blue Ridge Leader
  • Four hundred middle schoolers gathered Saturday morning at the Academies of Loudoun for Amazon Girls’ Tech Day to explore STEM fields, where Supervisor Laura A. TeKrony and former NASA astronaut Susan Kilrain shared advice on overcoming challenges.  Loudoun Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An environmental group reported that gas turbines at a Sterling data center may cause costly public health effects, while a state study reached different conclusions — officials have yet to release further details.  Loudoun Times-Mirror

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials at Inova Blood Donor Center in Leesburg say the inventory is critically low and urge community members to donate blood (especially Type O and platelet) to support patient care.  Loudoun Times-Mirror
