COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Loudoun County event for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is set for Tuesday, June 2 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at The Lodge at Hanson Park in Aldie, focusing on protecting older adults from neglect and abuse (pre-registration is required by May 22 with lunch provided).  Blue Ridge Leader
  • LAWS Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services will break ground on a new $11.6 million shelter complex in Leesburg this fall to expand support services for survivors. The project includes a public community services center & apartment-style units for both short-term and longer-term housing.  Loudoun Now
  • The Loudoun Coalition on Women and Girls has appointed Lisa McGrail as its executive director today. The news release said the appointment aims to boost support for local women & girls and guide upcoming community programs.  Loudoun Times-Mirror

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Loudoun County Fire and Rescue crews are addressing a gas leak at Lovettsville Elementary School this morning around 6:45 a.m., using fans to clear the odor as students and staff are moved to the gym while the sheriff's office assists with traffic control.  Loudoun Now

  • Roy Rogers has canceled plans for a 2,800 sqft restaurant in Leesburg set at The Shops at Russell Branch as it shifts resources to new markets (the chain already runs two local locations) while the landlord seeks a new tenant for the vacant lot.  The Burn
  • Leesburg's new Soko Butcher & Deli will open on Friday, May 22 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 15 Loudoun Street SE, replacing the former La Taqueria taco shop and offering both butcher counter meats for cookouts and a full menu of deli items.  The Burn

CULTURE NEWS

  • Outdoor enthusiasts, families, and newcomers will celebrate the Appalachian Trail at the Loudoun Appalachian Trail Festival on Saturday, June 6, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the historic Old Stone School in Hillsboro (presented by the Appalachian Trail Communities of Bluemont, Hillsboro and Round Hill).  Blue Ridge Leader
  • The Lucketts Ruritan Club held a May 10 ceremony at the community center to dedicate a marker honoring the Old Carolina Road and Thomas Jefferson's journey from Monticello to Philadelphia. Live Revolution-era music and historical commentary added local flavor to the event.  Loudoun Now

  • Loudoun County Public Schools has been recognized by the NAMM Foundation for its 18th Best Communities for Music Education award, reflecting growing enrollment & strong community support in band, chorus, orchestra, and guitar programs from over 1,000 schools nationwide.  Blue Ridge Leader

  • The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report shows that all of Virginia faces drought conditions with most of the state in severe drought - residents are advised to conserve water as the situation continues.  Loudoun Times-Mirror

  • Loudoun County is holding a government surplus auction offering bargains on a 2016 F250 truck, a 2018 Lincoln MKX, and household appliances until 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 14.
