Good morning, Leesburg.
County Parks, Recreation and Community Services staff finalized plans for a 40-mile trail loop that will give 150,000 residents access to schools, parks, and local landmarks in Loudoun County — the loop is part of the Loudoun Trails and Waterways initiative and will open in stages as missing links are completed.
Leesburg will host the inaugural Rally for Reading on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Douglass Community Center—organizers say children will hear readings by Lucky Diaz and Vanessa Brantley Newton and enjoy arts and crafts while transportation departs promptly from Sugarland Elementary School and Sterling Middle School.
Community Lutheran Church in Cascades opened Dreamscapes Performing Arts, a new theater that seats about 400 and held its soft opening with The Creative Dreamers—an arts group of neurodivergent adults.
The venue will host plays, operas, and musicals starting in October with a grand opening set for October 4—5.
On Tuesday, staff from Loudoun County Public Schools recommended the names VIEW Transition Academy and RISE Academy for new schools designed to help students with disabilities and high school students recovering from substance abuse—details now move to legal and staff reviews for a formal vote in August. VIEW will serve about 500 students while RISE will initially enroll 10 to 15 students.
Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy marked 30 years of protecting local wildlife and building programs by growing from a small group to over 600 volunteers who provide 15,500 service hours each year.
The group will host its annual meeting on June 8 from 3 to 5 p.m.—featuring a keynote address, volunteer awards, and plans to expand nature education with a $94,000 county grant.
The Town of Leesburg received three Signatures of Loudoun Design Excellence Awards at its June 3 Board of Supervisors meeting—one for streetscape updates at Edwards Ferry Road and King and Market streets, one for public space improvements at Mervin Jackson Park that added a community piano, and one for the design of the Birkby House Conservatory.
County officials plan to link water and sewer systems in Waterford and Paeonian Springs to fix weak wells and wastewater issues, but the project would force homeowners to pay nearly $18,000 for hook-up fees and remove trees along Clarkes Gap—residents now protest and ask supervisors to abort the plan.
Loudoun County supervisors denied a commission permit for a proposed cell tower in Lansdowne last night, citing concerns over the tower’s visual impact on nearby homes and its close proximity to affordable housing and planned power lines.
Milestone Towers had proposed the structure within a Virginia Department of Transportation right-of-way, and the motion passed with five in favor, three opposed and one absent — residents and officials noted that a different location might better serve community needs.
Between June 23 and 27, the Loudoun County Health Department will waive fees for testing HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and hepatitis B&C at the Health Clinic (102 Heritage Way NE, Suite 100) by appointment with limited walk-ins available.
