CRIME NEWS

  • Two murder trials scheduled to start this morning were canceled: Rashaun D. Owens, accused of killing Michai Dandridge-Carter during a Feb 14 shooting in Ashburn (with a mental evaluation hearing set for June 12) had his case postponed, and Jerome Edward Thompson Jr., who pleaded guilty to killing his father in an Aug 2023 shooting, will be sentenced on July 10 at 1 p.m.  Loudoun Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Loudoun County High School will host its annual graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 18 on the school’s front lawn. Dry Mill Road SE from Catoctin Circle to Lee Avenue will be closed from 7:15 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.—drivers should use alternate routes—as both vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be heavy.  Blue Ridge Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Loudoun County will host an electronics recycling event Saturday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dulles Town Center parking lot in the former Sears area at 21100 Dulles Town Circle—fees will be charged for televisions, computer monitors and on-site hard drive shredding, and only credit cards will be accepted.  Blue Ridge Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leesburg Town Council approved a new waste disposal contract with Patriot Disposal that will start after the current agreement ends on June 30. The $4.5 million deal includes an extra $306,345 to cover higher tipping fees at the county landfill—officials said they will review prices during annual renewals and negotiate any fee changes.  Loudoun Now
  • Dominion Energy proposed a revised 8.4-mile route for its power line that avoids school property after community pushback — the route, known as Route 3a, shifts north of Broad Run and increases the number of nearby homes affected — and the plan is now under review by the State Corporation Commission with county officials joining the case.  Loudoun Now
  • The Leesburg Town Council will vote tomorrow at 7 p.m. on new bylaws for the Performing Arts Commission—commission chair Melike Konur said the group, which began work in January with a May-approved handbook, will support local arts through education and advocacy.  Loudoun Now
  • Both Loudoun County Treasurer offices in Leesburg and Sterling will close on June 20 for half-day staff training from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.—services will resume at 8:30 a.m. on June 23.  Blue Ridge Leader
