- ➤ The new Ashburn Recreation & Community Center will open on July 31 at 6 p.m. at 21105 Coopers Hawk Drive and will offer public tours until 9:30 p.m. following the opening ceremony, with normal hours and free admission starting on August 1. The Burn
- ➤ Today, HITT Contracting became a major partner with JK Community Farm in Loudoun County by sponsoring an acre and providing a nearly $40,000 grant to build a HITT Play Zone at the new Outdoor Food Learning Center. The play area & its educational program will offer children hands-on learning about food and the environment and is expected to open in late July. Blue Ridge Leader

- ➤ Leesburg police responded to a fatal crash near the Leesburg Bypass and Edwards Ferry Road NE on June 12 at 11:35 p.m.—an adult female pedestrian was struck by a passenger vehicle and pronounced dead while the driver remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators. Blue Ridge Leader

- ➤ The national At Home retail chain announced Monday it will permanently close 26 stores including the Leesburg location at Compass Creek near the airport following a bankruptcy filing. The closures will be complete by the end of September. The Burn
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At a June 10 board finance committee meeting, supervisors debated plans for a new equine center but did not reach a clear direction on whether it should generate revenue or serve as a community facility. Supervisor TeKrony favors a dedicated equestrian center while Supervisor Kershner supports a multi-use complex — county staff will revisit the issue in future talks — as the board awaits clear guidance. - ➤ A joint Board of Supervisors and VDOT hearing last week proposed paving three gravel roads in Loudoun—Lenah Road south of Rt. 50, Gulick Mill Road near Leesburg, and Hogback Mountain Road off Rt. 15—as part of the county's Secondary Road Six-Year Plan using grant funds, and a final board vote on these projects is expected next month. - ➤ The Northern Virginia Regional Commission got Platinum designation from the SolSmart program, making it the first community in the South and the first regional organization in the country to earn the honor—after it got Gold in 2019. NVRC Chair John T. Chapman said the award shows the group’s work to grow solar energy in local governments. Loudoun Now
- ➤ The Loudoun County Department of General Services will hold a public hearing on June 27 at 5—7 p.m. in the Leesburg conference room at 801 Sycolin Road to discuss an amendment that raises the permitted capacity of the county’s solid waste management facility; the public can also submit comments online through July 11. - ➤ Today, Governor Youngkin signed SB 746 which makes it a crime of involuntary manslaughter for anyone who knowingly sells or distributes fentanyl that causes a death—giving police stronger tools to fight the fentanyl crisis in Virginia. Blue Ridge Leader

- ➤ Baseball returned to Mickie Gordon Memorial Park on Saturday when Middleburg Post 295 hosted its season opener against Leesburg Post 34 on the renovated field that replaced a cricket pitch amid strong community opposition. Post Commander Gary Nickelson thanked local officials (Middleburg Town Council, County Chair Phyllis Randall, Supervisor Laura TeKrony and parks Director Steve Torpy) while Leesburg won the game 12-1.
