BUSINESS NEWS

  • Paris Baguette will open today at the Shops at Russell Branch with a dining room, outdoor patio, and display cases filled with pastries and sandwiches — marking the chain's second location in Loudoun County following its Ashburn store.  The Burn
  • Work is underway on converting the former Cubasi Bistro restaurant into a new Sushi Cho restaurant at the Dulles 28 Centre near Wegmans and Target on Waxpool Road and Pacific Boulevard—this location will be the chain's second in the area, though no opening date has been set.  The Burn

CRIME NEWS

  • Lathius Noel Martin, 40, from Alexandria will face an eight-day jury trial beginning Oct 20 on charges stemming from the fatal stabbing of Wesley Richard Scott outside his Sterling home on March 1—witnesses said the two were involved in a physical altercation and if convicted of malicious wounding, Martin may face a life sentence.  Loudoun Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Communities across Northern Virginia will mark Juneteenth on June 19 and 21 with events that feature music, historical talks, and fireworks—Leesburg's Burg Family Reunion Club will hold its celebration at Ida Lee Park on June 21 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with admission at ten dollars for ages 12 and up and five dollars for kids 11 and under.  Inside Nova

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The proposal to change health insurance for future LCPS retirees is advancing to the School Board for final review, and the plan will replace Cigna with a United Healthcare Medicare advantage plan starting Jan. 1. A separate CVS pharmacy benefits contract, expected to lower costs and maintain current coverage, will also be reviewed on June 24 — an effort to reduce disruption for retirees.  Loudoun Now
  • On Tuesday, the Loudoun County School Board reviewed an updated agreement between the school division, the county sheriff’s office, and Leesburg Police that clarifies roles for school resource officers, adjusts training requirements, and adds guidelines for body-worn cameras and overdose notifications. The board and advisory committees will continue refining the document and present it for a vote in August—officials expect to propose additional edits soon.  Loudoun Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted June 17 to ask the Leesburg Town Council to permanently close Church Street between Market and Cornwall streets—officials said the council will review the proposal in an upcoming meeting.  Loudoun Times-Mirror
  • Today, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved 16 RTOT tourism grants totaling $391,663 to support local tourism events—initiatives include music festivals in Leesburg and projects at Tarara Winery that aim to boost overnight stays. The grants, awarded to nonprofits, municipalities and local businesses, will fund programs designed to attract visitors and enhance the county’s marketability.  Loudoun County
  • Consultants presented six proposed changes to the General Plan last night to guide electrical infrastructure, suggesting co-location of transmission corridors and reduced visual impact by undergrounding lines near homes. The county will seek public input next as the Planning Commission reviews the draft in September and the board votes on the policy changes in December (aiming to balance electrical needs with community concerns).  Loudoun Now
