COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leesburg preschool teacher Lia Marie Johnson was struck by a car on June 2 and is now in a coma in Buenos Aires, with severe injuries including a skull fracture, a broken arm, and a collapsed lung. Her family and community are raising funds to transfer her to Inova Fairfax Hospital & have already gathered nearly $50,000 toward the $145,000 air repatriation cost while she shows slight signs of improvement.  Loudoun Now
  • Stacker compiled a ranking of immigrant sources to Virginia using U.S. Census Bureau data and 2023 five-year estimates—showing that El Salvador leads with 109,383 residents followed by India with 97,548 and Mexico with 63,937—reflecting a diverse immigrant community that has shaped the state over many years.  Inside Nova
  • Community members raised over $7,500 this week to support Round Hill firefighter Capt. Dannie Wilson, who was recently diagnosed with cancer, by holding a car show fundraiser at Ion International Training Center in Leesburg—Route 11 Cruz’n organized the event in 30 days with help from LCFR. Merchandise sales and Res-Q-BBQ donations added to the total as locals united to back Wilson in his battle.  Loudoun Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lisa Kaenzig, who will be Foxcroft’s 11th Head of School, arrived on campus July 1 to begin her role at the all-girls boarding and day school near Middleburg and will be officially installed on Sept. 19. She brings 22 years of college leadership experience (most recently as dean at Hobart and William Smith Colleges) and holds advanced degrees (a doctorate from William and Mary and a master’s from George Washington University).  Loudoun Now
  • Sterling District Supervisor Koran Saines kicked off his annual Back-to-School Supply Drive to supply students and teachers in Sterling with essential school materials. Donations will be accepted at the Sterling Library, Claude Moore Rec — Community Center, and VFW Post 1177 in Leesburg as well as through an online Amazon Wishlist.  Loudoun Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A county transportation and land use committee endorsed an application to rezone an 8.19-acre parcel along Russell Branch Parkway south of Rt. 7 to allow 78 attached housing units with options for townhomes and affordable dwellings. The planning commission gave a narrow 4-3 recommendation—project staff asked for more smaller units and improved civic space—and the full board will review the proposal next.  Loudoun Now
  • Eric Keeler is named Loudoun County’s director of the Department of Housing and Community Development — he brings 30 years of experience in affordable housing. His appointment is effective August 14 — he will lead programs that help people secure safe and affordable homes.  Loudoun Now

  • The Purcellville Police Department plans to host training classes for civilians under the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice’s Active Attack Program — a measure to help community members prepare for potential threats.
