- ➤ After years of work, the new Ashburn Recreation and Community Center opened Thursday night as the county’s third joint facility, featuring a 50-meter competition pool, leisure pool, spa, and the largest gym in the Parks and Recreation system. - ➤ A 43-year-old Peruvian man working for an airport services company pleaded guilty to smuggling cocaine after agents found 1.95 kilograms of the drug and over $54,000 in cash in his bags on an April 24 COPA Airlines flight — he faces a sentence from 5 to 40 years when he is sentenced on November 6. - ➤ Virginia is holding a sales tax holiday today through August 3 that lets shoppers buy qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, Energy Star and WaterSense products, and emergency preparedness items without state sales tax — spending limits apply for each category. - ➤ Purcellville Vice Mayor Ben Nett filed motions to release the grand jury transcript that handed down six felony indictments against him and two against Town Manager Kwasi Fraser after both were arrested on July 23 and released on $5,000 bonds, while his attorney requested to amend his bond terms to allow travel to Kentucky & nearby states amid health concerns for his parents with a hearing scheduled for Aug. 14 and with Fraser’s attorney set to seek recusal of Loudoun County Circuit Court judges. - ➤ Owners of a residential property near Arcola want to change the zoning from Countryside Residential to Industrial Park to allow an industrial project built on 4.5 acres that includes a lesson building, daycare, and a home.
