- ➤ Leesburg officials unveiled a new playground—designed for children ages 2 to 5—at Ida Lee Recreation Center on Aug. 13. The facility will offer local families a safe space for early play. Loudoun Times-Mirror
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A LCSO motorcycle deputy was seriously injured in a crash on Mountain Road early Wednesday afternoon— a civilian motorcyclist was also hurt— and both riders were taken to area hospitals while officers investigated the incident and closed the road between Hyatt Lane and Morrisonville Road. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Sterling man was arrested by Loudoun County Animal Services after his two dogs died from overheating in a parked car—he is charged with two felony counts of animal cruelty and will appear in court on Sept. 6. Loudoun Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Loudoun County School Board awarded a $202 million contract to Winchester-based Howard Shockey & Sons to build High School 14 next to Watson Mountain Middle School in Dulles North during an Aug. 12 meeting. The 347,000 square-foot school will open in fall 2028 — the board approved the contract unanimously to meet a Sept. 13 deadline. Loudoun Now
- ➤ At the August 12 meeting, Loudoun County Public Schools' CFO recommended transferring $43M from the operating reserves to a healthcare insurance fund—rising medical and prescription claims drove the decision—and the board will vote on the transfers in September; if approved, the operating fund balance will reach zero. - ➤ FirstEnergy hosted its first community meeting on Tuesday to discuss plans to build a 500-kV power line through 44 miles of existing rights-of-way in northern Loudoun — the project will upgrade current lines with 185-foot towers and is set to begin construction in 2027 after filing for approvals this fall.
