CRIME NEWS

  • A Leesburg man will serve up to six years in prison for a high-speed chase and crash at Dulles last year—he had an extensive record of driving violations.  Loudoun Times-Mirror
  • Leesburg Police arrested 21-year-old Tazi Keon Hardin after he fled while handcuffed on Aug.29 during a grand larceny arrest tied to an Aug.26 vehicle theft where he picked up dropped keys on East Market Street & ended a nine-hour manhunt when a resident located him near the W&OD bike trail early Saturday morning.  Loudoun Now
  • Leesburg Police are investigating an incident when a laser was aimed at an aircraft near Leesburg Executive Airport last Wednesday at 11 p.m.—officials from the FAA noted that such actions pose a serious safety risk and are a federal crime subject to severe penalties.  Loudoun Now
  • Deputies responded at 3:22 p.m. to a crash on Rt. 7 near Bluemont when a Loudoun County Public School bus collided with an SUV driven by 49-year-old Thomas Allen Broomall, who was found intoxicated and arrested—one adult was taken to a hospital for minor injuries while two juveniles received treatment at the scene.  Loudoun Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, the LCPS Special Committee on Retiree Benefits reviewed rising healthcare costs and discussed the rejected Cigna reimbursement plan as well as 2024 policy changes affecting re-hired employees—concerns included the impact on fixed incomes; the committee will hold its final meeting at the School Administration Building on Sept 11 at 10 a.m.  Loudoun Now

  • Virginia drivers pay 41.6 cents per gallon at the pump — ranking the state ninth nationwide according to the Tax Foundation. Although nearby areas show higher fuel prices, experts say costs may remain stable unless hurricanes or other disruptions occur.  Inside Nova
  • Trial dates for Purcellville Vice Mayor Carl ‘Ben’ Nett and Town Manager Kwasi Fraser have been pushed out another three weeks as their lawyers need more time to review grand jury transcripts—both are set to appear in court on Sept 25 at 1 p.m. and face charges for commercial fraud and rigged government bidding; Nett also is charged with computer misuse.  Loudoun Now
  • Loudoun County Supervisors approved a proposal for 78 new housing units in Belmont Cove along Russel Brand Parkway on eight acres last night—after amending the plan to include smaller townhomes, multi-family affordable units, and a commitment that 47 units will be no larger than 2,600 square feet. Planning staff raised concerns over land use, buffer zones, and sidewalks, but the board passed the motion by a 5-3-1 vote.  Loudoun Now
  • Loudoun County filed a participation notice in Dominion Energy’s proposal for electric transmission lines and is urging residents to give input at public hearings on September 18 and September 29 at Rock Ridge High School at 6:30 p.m.—or by telephone on December 15 with pre-registration until December 9.  Loudoun County
