COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at Oatlands, 30 individuals from 18 countries became U.S. citizens as they took the Oath of Allegiance administered by USCIS Section Chief Juan Wood and celebrated with moving cheers and the singing of the national anthem — a milestone upheld by the Ketoctin Chapter DAR that continues a tradition since 2017. CULTURE NEWS

  • A new art studio called Hawaii Fluid Art opened this weekend at Loudoun Station in Ashburn to offer classes in fluid art, glass painting and resin projects—making it the first NoVa studio as more than 40 are active across the country.  The Burn

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Madison’s Trust Elementary in Ashburn, kids joined an after-school chess club run by the Silver Knights Chess Academy—coaches taught them moves and strategies without using screens so they could build brain skills. The program, offered at 350 local schools, gives students a fun way to learn chess and think ahead.  WTOP
  • Foxcroft School—an all-girls boarding school near Middleburg—celebrated the installation of Dr. Lisa Kaenzig as its new head of school on Sept. 19. She is the 11th leader in the school's 114-year history and replaced Catherine McGehee after her 11-year tenure.  Loudoun Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Loudoun Clerk Gary M. Clemens is launching a new remote access service that lets customers search deed and land record indices online and pay to view specific documents—this update makes it easier for occasional users to avoid trips to the courthouse.  Loudoun County
  • Leesburg Air Force pilot Adam Fuhrmann earned a spot in NASA's new astronaut candidate class after competing with more than 8,000 applicants; he, a Heritage High School graduate, will begin two years of training before taking on flight assignments to support space missions—fulfilling a dream he held since age 8.  Loudoun Now
  • The board of supervisors delayed a final decision on a new substation along Crosstrail Boulevard near Tuscarora Crossing after a split vote on Sept. 16— the final vote will be held on Oct. 7. Tuscarora Landbay 3 LLC tied the substation permit to plans for three data centers—residents worry about the facility’s impact and want safety measures like a 12-foot screening wall.  Loudoun Now
  • On September 10, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved changes to county ordinances to stop naming streets after Confederate leaders or figures that promoted segregation—this gives the Director of Mapping and Geographic Information authority to rename or remove street names that break the rules. The move continues a county effort that began in September 2020 with input from local residents and historians to remove such names.  Loudoun County

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new Trace One analysis shows that Virginia had 23.2% fewer foodborne disease outbreaks and 55.6% fewer illnesses since before COVID—improvements linked to better food safety practices. This data reflects a smaller drop in outbreaks compared to national trends.  Inside Nova
