Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 4th of October.
Good morning, Leesburg.
🎓 Education
Two Loudoun high school students built a free online platform that uses video game features to teach machine learning, computational biology, and cybersecurity, drawing over 40,000 global users.
Abhinav Duddala from Independence High School and Ajay Vinjarumi from Rock Ridge High School developed the site over the past two years to offer accessible, gamified courses.
🏛️ Government
Last week the Virginia Supreme Court reversed the 2021 contempt conviction of Katie Orndoff (she told Judge James Fisher she smoked marijuana before testifying in a domestic assault trial) and ended her 10-day jail sentence after video evidence failed to match the judge's record.
The decision marks the second time Fisher's actions have been overturned.
🏥 Health
Loudoun County expects to get $10 million from the Purdue Pharma opioid settlement to fund new treatment, recovery, and prevention programs.
Officials said the funds—divided among the state, localities, and the opioid abatement authority—will support projects that help reduce opioid addiction.
