BUSINESS NEWS

  • JK Land Holdings held a groundbreaking ceremony with Leesburg and Loudoun County officials on Oct. 9 to kick off a warehouse project on the former Westpark Hotel site, and construction will soon begin on 86,400 square feet of flex/industrial space—boosting local business and job opportunities.  Blue Ridge Leader

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oatlands staff, volunteers and supporters gathered at the historic manor near Leesburg on Thursday when National Trust CEO Carol Quillen visited for the first time. She said the property (established in 1768 and donated in 1965) will host new programs that tell its full history with input from local leaders.  Loudoun Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Loudoun County’s Youth and Family Support Services Program is accepting registrations for a free five-week virtual workshop called Parenting Wisely Teen Edition that runs on Wednesdays from October 15 to November 12 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. It will teach families skills to help teens dealing with issues such as truancy, poor grades and behavioral challenges.  Loudoun County
  • Federal Judge Leonie M. Brinkman today granted a preliminary injunction against the Loudoun County School Board in a Title IX lawsuit over suspensions of Stone Bridge High School students following allegations of harassment and discrimination in the locker room—plaintiffs must deposit a $125,000 bond by Oct. 15 to cover potential attorney fees. Attorney General Jason Miyares filed a brief noting the students are likely to succeed on their religious discrimination and free speech claims.  Loudoun Now
  • On Friday, nearly 300 families visited Watson Mountain Middle School for the second Invite Your Parent to School Day, where parents joined classes and met teachers to see their children's daily lessons (the event expanded to include seventh grade).  Loudoun Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new 57-page study shows that western Loudoun's groundwater levels have dropped between 10 and 40 feet since the 1980s and over 3,200 wells are abandoned—farmers now haul water and feed hay early as drought conditions worsen. The report warns that without immediate updates to monitoring and land-use policies, thousands of households may face water shortages within the next decade.  Blue Ridge Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Loudoun County government is holding an online surplus auction with items from children’s wooden lockers to a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado; the auction will close Thursday, October 16th at 9:30 a.m. Buyers must register online and pick up items by appointment at 14 Cardinal Park Drive, Suite 106 — auction pickup dates are listed with each item — while a 9.75% buyer’s premium applies.  Loudoun County
  • Three months into Loudoun County’s free on-demand transit pilot in Leesburg, average daily rides rose from 33 to 120 and trip times dropped from 30 to 10 minutes, plus fixed-route bus use also increased. County officials will update the Board in December as they consider extending the service to Sterling.  Loudoun Now

  • Leesburg native Charles 'Fireball' Roberts— a Douglass High School graduate from 1959— was the first alumnus inducted into the Virginia Interscholastic Association’s Hall of Fame; he will be honored today at Douglass Legacy Day at Historic Douglass School from noon to 5 p.m. where displays and talks will share his story.  Loudoun Now
