  • Residents and community groups oppose an Eastwind Hotels resort planned on 147 acres near Sky Meadows Park, citing water shortage and dangerous traffic at the Blue Ridge Mountain Road intersection. They aim to block development before the Loudoun Board of Supervisors reviews the plan.  Loudoun Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dough Baby, a new pizza spot in Hamilton near the post office (with only four parking spots nearby), begins its soft opening Friday, Dec. 19. It offers carry-out only from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The Burn
  • The Cafe Rio restaurant in Ashburn, once in Ashbrook Marketplace, closed permanently last weekend as the fast-casual Mexican chain ended operations in Loudoun County - its door sign directs customers to the nearest venue in Herndon at 330 Elden Street.  The Burn

CULTURE NEWS

  • Professional planner Al Van Huyck was honored on Dec. 9 by the Loudoun County Preservation and Conservation Coalition for his 40 years of involvement in heritage groups and preservation efforts, including founding the Loudoun Cemetery Conservancy. Local supporters stopped by to thank him for his continuous contributions to preserving Loudoun history.  Loudoun Now
  • Laurel Hill Farm near Waterford is a 30-acre property added to the Virginia Landmarks Register. The historic farm traces its roots to a 1762 land patent and features a Federal-style farmhouse built circa 1793 — a testament to early Loudoun heritage.  Loudoun Now
  • The Horn family in Ashburn won $50K (ABC’s Great Christmas Light Fight award) for their nearly 100,000-light display that covers their home, roof, yard, and driveway. The festive lights will run every night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. until the Saturday after Christmas.  WTOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Loudoun County School Board approved a revised school transfer policy on Tuesday, Dec. 16 that uses 'base capacity' to decide overcrowding — it updates criteria for special requests and adds voluntary documentation. Some amendments passed while a proposal for future instructional suitability guidelines was approved.  Loudoun Now
  • At its Dec. 16 meeting, the Loudoun County School Board reviewed 2025 reading data and literacy support staff details. Administrators explained screening procedures and staff assignments for elementary and secondary levels — including provisions for English learners and special education students.  Loudoun Now
  • The Loudoun County School Board banned personal devices during school hours on Tuesday due to a new state law. School laptops will continue to be used for learning while some special education students are exempted.  Loudoun Now
  • The Loudoun County School Board approved $124 million for local school enhancements during its December meeting — $71 million for the Capital Improvement Program and $53 million for the Capital Asset Preservation Program.  Loudoun Times-Mirror
  • The Loudoun County School Board approved a school rezoning plan on Dec. 16 amid parental criticism (some said the changes were overly disruptive).  Loudoun Times-Mirror
